Dehradun, 1910. Before the town wakes, Satnaam Das walks to the stone tank for water piped down from Rajpur, stirs batisa in ghee from cows whose owner he knows by name, and paints three words over his one-room shop: PURE GHEE ONLY. The last letter leans. Dehradun Talkies follows that shop — Satnaam Mishthan Bhandar, across the road from the Kohinoor Talkies cinema — for 110 years, one episode for each decade from 1910 to 2020. Every episode stands on its own: a big wedding order, a salesman with a tin of something cheaper, the war years, the building of the Clock Tower, a new state capital, a river turning grey. Every episode is also the same family, five generations of it, getting a little quicker, a little more careful, and a little less sure of each other. Nobody here is a villain. Each shortcut makes sense on the day it is taken — a shortage, a doctor's bill, a daughter's wedding. The litchi orchards become concrete, the hills are cut for limestone, the rivers that fed the valley slow to drains, and the sweets change with them.
