About the story

Bahadurgarh, 2018. The Modi family owns the biggest business in town — tiles, sanitaryware, and half the wages, contracts and favours that keep the place running. Their name is on everything. Their matriarch, Komila, is spoken of the way people speak of the weather: with fear, and almost never by anyone who has actually met her. Into the edges of that world comes Gopina — an orphan taken in by relatives, still finishing her degree, kept at the bottom of a broke local newspaper as the unpaid intern who makes the tea. She has one habit that keeps getting her into trouble: when something doesn't add up, she asks why. So when a boy from her own lane dies at the Modi factory and the company swears he never worked there, Gopina cannot stop asking the smallest, most dangerous question in the world. What follows is a slow-burn Indian drama about truth and power in a small town — where the newspaper, the police, the great family, and even her own home all have a reason to keep a nobody from an answer. With a naive, good-hearted heroine, a jealous cousin who would burn the world before she let anyone harm her, and a quiet, decent stranger who is far more than he appears, it is the origin of the story the title already promises: how a girl who wanted nothing came to stand before the most powerful woman in Haryana — and how a paradise, and its price, begins.
